I really, really love people in their early 20's/late teens with no kids, no mortgage, etc. telling ME how much my FAMILY can live on and what we can do without. It's great to know that my DH can do WITHOUT a cell phone and internet when he's in IT and those things are directly related to his career.

Idiots.

I get what you're saying cat lady, lol. The thing that bothers me although they didn't do it too much in this thread, is that if you're poor you're lazy. If you're out of work you aren't looking for a job. If you can't live off $2/year you're overspending.

The basics of life are expensive nowadays moreso than the last 15-20 years. Working at McDonalds may be a waste of my time if my income for that month is less than my rent or mortgage, ya know.

exactly earthonesbath. Another thing - within the past...I don't know, 5-7 years, salaries haven't gone up but COL has risen each year. So even for normal, middle class families who are still working it's harder to get by on the same salary they were doing fine with 5 years ago (that's also happened to us).

But think of it this way - and yes, this has happened to us - my DH makes over $100K. When he gets laid off, finding a new job is literally a full time job. He HAS to be ready to go for an interview at a drop of a hat, and sometimes the interview may mean airplane travel. So it would be pretty damn stupid to say, "Sorry, VP of Merck, but I can't meet with you today to discuss perhaps hiring me for what I went to school for, what I've been in business in for the past 20 years, because I have to work at McD during that time". It would be equally stupid to work at McD making $8 an hour when that $8 an hour would be better spent trying to find a well paying job that he's qualified for.

Now...if it were between starving, living in our car, etc. and working at McD's, then of course..."you want fries with that?" lol. But the idea that everyone should just run to a FF job instead of searching for what they are actually qualified for; even if that takes longer, is just stupid.

Read anything by Howard Zinn. Blaming the poor, or those out of work, is old BS.
