Wow. The OP sure got defensive when someone suggested that she left her dog out too long. I was thinking the same thing, what the heck is the dog doing outside when it's cold enough to literally freeze a tail off?
I'm on the OP's side. Shit happens. Even to good people. This is also another illustration of why I never post personal stories on the forums. Especially stories about my pet.
I'm sorry but even I who live in FL now don't let my dogs out for a long period of time when we have our freakish 20 degree to in the teens degree weather here. They tell you on the news don't leave pets out, watch kids and seniors, cover your flowers and plants for frost, etc, etc. and I live in a "warm" state.
Don't post stuff like this on the public forums if you can't handle the attacks. She was wrong, sorry but very very wrong.
I lived in NYC all my life till 2005 and my dogs hated to have to go out in the cold, even with jackets on. One of them, if his paws touched any ice patches he'd cry and we'd have to carry him. If you have pets you need to know how to take care of them the right way especially if they are old already and you know they need more attention and care.
Sure, shit happens, but when it does, it's nice to see people accept responsibility for it--not post it as some sort of amusing anecdote over which they feel no remorse.
It wasn't an accident, it was a mistake, and if she can't see the difference, then I certainly can't feel sorry for her.
I agree with Silver-gwyn... doggie must have been having fun frolicking outside in the cold. Its not unheard of, and just becuase your dog doesnt like the cold, doesnt mean ALL dogs dont like the cold. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Also... a personal scenario that can be an alternate possibility.
It could be that the tail didnt freeze off but fell off because of something my Vet called "Happy Tail". It happens when a trauma occurs in the tail by a dog who wags their tail alot... and frequently bangs it.
My dogs tail tip fell off. About 2" worth. Because his tail is covered with fur I never saw any kind of trauma. He didnt whine, or cry when touched, He didnt bleed... nothing that you would see. Just one day I found the tip of his tail ::freaked me out!::. Took him to the vet... they cleaned it, bandaged it up, and said theres really nothing you can do with dogs who have happy tail and dont know how hard they hit it when wagging (other than remove the tail).
Im just saying there could be other alternatives... instead of condemning the OP.

I thought maybe her dog uses a doggie door, which is why the OP didn't notice him being out for so long? That was my guess, anyway.
